Image
In a large ballroom in Houston Texas, two men sit across from each other on a large stage. There is a large monitor between them and a crowd of jeering people behind them, they both are playing the game Street Fighter 6 on the largest stage Texas has to offer. The game comes down to the very last round but a Dallas native under the the gamer name of Coosco clutches out a close set to move on in the tournament.  They are both at a tournament called Texas Showdown, held in Houston, Texas every year. This is the biggest tournament in Texas and it means a lot to Coosco who has been working to win it all. He has been a pillar of the fighting game community and looks to become more than that during each tournament he travels to. From the beginning Micheal “Coosco” Henderson is a Player and community figure for the fighting game community from Dallas, Texas. He originally started playing fighting games as a kid but was inspired when he watched the largest Fighting game in the world...

University research team awarded $1.5 million for first responders research

Article was Originally written in October 2024 The National Science Foundation has awarded 1.5 million dollars to a University of North Texas research team to research communication technology to help first responders. The technology being researched is centered around using drones to improve communication within disaster situations by setting up base stations in the air that allow for reception when there might be disruptions. The technology is for situations like natural disasters, or during a large public event like a concert.  The interdisciplinary team researching it consists of two professors from the College of Engineering and two from the College of Business, who will support five students who will join the project. Kamesh Namuduri, the lead investigator of the project, is a long-time UNT electrical engineering professor who was previously given a smaller grant by the National Science Foundation for this project before asking for more money so he could take the projec...

Best games I played this year : 2024 edition

Image
I played more games this year than I ever have. This included quite a few new for 2024 fighting games like Tekken 8, Under-Night Inbirth 2 and 2XKO. All of them were enjoyable in their own ways but did not take me away from Street Fighter 6 which remains my favorite current fighting game that I play nearly every day. When I was not playing fighting games this year I played various other games that brought me to some wonderful new places. Here are the best games I played this year with corresponding categories to fit how I felt about them.  The game that surprised me the most: Hades 2 I knew I was playing something special when I booted up the original Hades in early January. It took some time to click, but eventually, it became one of my all-time favorites. I had beaten the game's main story by completing it a certain number of times, and then another game took me by storm: Hades 2.  While Hades 2 remains in early access to this day, its amazing evolution of the already ...

2XKO EVO Preview: New and approachable Fighting game for a new era

Image
This preview was made with only my experience playing it on the floor of evo and before the home alpha lab. 2XKO or Project L has recently been playable at the world's largest fighting game tournament Evolution 2024, and I have played the demo more than a few times. I played the first version that was playable last year at Evolution 2023 and at this year's Evolution event, the game has been further polished and has an expanded roster compared to when it was first playable. The game is shaping up well for the first at-home test in the middle of August, and the Demo was a good preview for the fighting experience.  New ways to fight 2XKO is a team fighting game that focuses on competitive play and two-person teams versus other two-person teams. While the game is playable as a single-person team controlling two characters, the demos at Evolution did not feature it, so I can not speak on its quality. I played the demo roughly seven or eight times, and I played most of the cast on...

Hades 2 Early access impresses with its plentiful content and promising story

Image
No spoilers  When Hades 2 was originally announced at the Game Awards in 2022, I was only tangentially interested in playing it. Its version of isometric rogue-like action was not my cup of tea back in 2022 but its versions of Greek gods and mythology interested me. I grew up reading the Percy Jackson books and during that time learned to love the mythology and conflicts made by having younger heroes clash with mythical gods and monsters.  I was heavily reminded of this when I first booted up the original Hades this year to play one of 2020’s best games. Most people I had spoken to loved the game and my experience echoed many of those I had heard. Hades is a great mash of well-designed systems, that interweave interesting replayable combat design and great storytelling. Hades was the first roguelike that I had spent a lot of time playing and it remains the favorite game I have beaten this year for sure.  The week after I had beaten Hades, Hades 2 appeared like a miracle. ...
